ChristChurch Cathedral in the Square

November 23, 2009

Summer at the ChristChurch Cathedral is ablaze with colour, life and festivities.

Tens of thousands visit; many of them school children bringing gifts to place under the Christmas tree.

Others come to spend a quiet moment away from busy holiday shopping. It’s a great place to simply sit awhile and take in the iconic building’s 128-year history.

There’s something for everyone there. Drop in for a chat: volunteer guides and guardians are always around. Free guided tours are offered daily and an audio tour is available (just $10) in four languages.

Climbing the tower is a constant favourite for all ages. The view takes in all parts of the city, foothills and mountains.

The cathedral is the mother church of the Anglican Diocese of Christchurch. Services are held daily and all are warmly welcomed to take part.

The gift shop, situated in the Cathedral Visitors’ Centre is a delight to browse. You’ll find unique gifts and mementos at very reasonable prices. And to top off your time there, enjoy a coffee in the Cathedral Café. Open daily 8.30am – 7.00pm.
