Protecting your Child from Internet Predators

The internet is an exciting place for fun and educational information. Additionally, the world wide web serves as a great way to stay close with friends and family members, no matter how far away they live.

However, the internet has become an increasingly dangerous place for children, as predators use the network to lure children into their web of hurt and deceit.

Since the advent of the internet there has been a significant increase in the number of kids falling into this trap. Despite vigilance over them by friends, parents and law enforcement bodies, still the count is on a rise. In certain cases the relationship is put to a stop by timely intervention but there are times when there are kids who are not subject to vigilance. And it’s they who are in the most danger, both psychologically and physically if they happen to meet these predatory individuals.

Many internet companies, including Yahoo! and Netscape, offer parental control features that allow you to block and monitor your child’s access to the internet. You would not dare allow your child to watch inappropriate TV shows or movies, so you should also monitor your child’s access to the internet to ensure he or she does not open any inappropriate sites.

Speak with your child and teach them internet safety techniques. Only allow your child to converse with individuals they know. Encourage your child to come to you with any problems or if an unknown individual is contacting them over the internet.

These days there are strict rules and guidelines to follow for accessing the internet in schools and libraries. In your own home, place the family computer in a place where others can see the screen. Instead of having a separate home office, put the family computer in the kitchen or family room. This ensures your child is never alone while exploring the internet and you can be nearby if any problems arise.

Also, teach your child about the dangers of the internet. You should not deliberately scare your child into a certain behaviour, but let him or her know the potential problems that may arise. Also notify your child of the proper way to report problems or screen names of individuals who are participating in unsavory communication.
Ensuring your child’s protection while on the internet will not only give you peace of mind, but it will also help your child to be cautious and selective on the net.
