Materials Specifications – Print

Following are the requirements for supplying material for inclusion in Family Times.

Scanning: Images scanned suitable for newsprint with a:

  • dot gain allowance of 30%;
  • shadow maximum 65%;
  • highlight up to 2%;
  • background screens 10%.

Recommended Screens. 100Lpi, round dot.

Digital: PC Programmes used

  • Coreldraw
  • Indesign
  • Photoshop
  • Microsoft Word

cor_36 Coreldraw:
Version higher than 10 (when available) will not import directly and will need to be saved as a Coreldraw (or lower) file.

fre_36 Freehand:
Files should be exported as an Eps. Remember to convert type to paths first.

ps_36 Photoshop:
Files saved as Tiff, Jpeg or Eps are acceptable.

word_36 Word:
Files can be accepted for text of advertisements or editorial.

Advertisements created in MS Office programs cannot be placed as they lose their formatting. Talk to us about alternatives.

Please note: If supplying complete material, please supply a print out of the finished advertisement. Also make sure that black overprint (if used) is set correctly. These will not show on screen but could output incorrectly when film work is made.

If supplying an Eps that contains placed Tiff’s, make sure the Tiff’s are included as separate files on the same disk or in the same folder. Do not assume the files are automatically embedded when the Eps is created.

girl_on_rockerDigital camera images: These RGB images are quite acceptable, providing the camera is 3MPixel or more, and the images are saved at the highest resolution, in a jpg format.

CMYK images: image software should be set up for newsprint as noted under screens and be at least 200dpi, 300dpi preferred.

Photographs/Logos:

If you are sending photographs or logos to be scanned and used in your advertisement, please make sure they are of a high standard. Images should be at least the same size or larger than the final intended production size.

Maximum image size is A4 (210mm x 297mm). File size should be between 500 kilo byte and 1 mega byte.

Please note: Printed images (as in brochures, etc) will have already been screened and will have to be rescreened which will lower the finished quality depending on the original resolution. Please supply original photographs wherever possible.

Fonts

Please make sure all fonts have been converted to paths before creating an Eps file. Alternatively please make sure all fonts are included with the file. If not, we may be forced to use substitute fonts which may not match your original concept and lead to problems with positioning of type.

Disks

If sending files on disk, both CD’s and DVD’s will be accepted.

Email

You can email your advertisement to the Family Times Design Team at:

familytimes@xtra.co.nz

Fax

We cannot use logos or images send by fax as the resolution quality is low and will lead to poor reproduction.
